Do You Tip in Paris Restaurants? The Honest Answer

The number one question American visitors ask us — and the answer surprises everyone: in France, you genuinely don't have to tip. Here's how it really works.
The rule
By law, French menu prices include 15% service. Waiters are salaried professionals, not tip-dependent workers. Nobody will chase you, give you a look, or hand the card machine back with a tip screen. That American anxiety? Leave it at customs.
What locals actually do
Round up, or leave €2-5 for a good dinner in cash on the table — a gesture, not a duty. Exceptional evening with a big group? €10 says thank you loudly. Paying by card and leaving nothing extra is completely normal and completely polite.
What waiters actually want
Your return visit, honestly. Regulars are the real currency of a Paris bistro — ours has collected them since 1930. Become one
